Very intriguing brass colour painted probably early 20th century handled metal bowl or basket. It is in the style of Josef Hoffman with geomatric pattern decoration made of small square apertures where the designer is clearly concentrating on clear lines and and pure abstract form. It carries a incomplete mark of an eagle on a branch. The eagle is looking on the right. This mark is said to belong to J P Kayser & Son in Germany a pewter manufacturer who produced Wiener Werkstätte items designed by Josef Hoffmann. Surface brass colour painted finish (as it was done at the time: retailers specify the required finish from the catalogues). Delicately riveted handle and decorative embossed bottom. The silver-like metal appearing under the brass colour painting is certainly Kayserzinn pewter since the manufacturer didn't work with silver.
This is a rare find. It is very representative of the early XXth century modern design style inspired by the Wiener Werkstätte and Bauhaus.
